The difference between a beginner’s and a professional tambourine
As players become more comfortable with the mechanics of the tambourine and as they begin to use it more often, many desire to upgrade their instrument. There are different types of tambourines for beginners and for professionals. There are also different ethnic variants of the tambourine, such as the riq, which is most often used in traditional Arabic music. Beginner’s tambourines will generally be lighter weight, and the jingles may be made of less durable material. The lighter weight of the instrument helps the beginner get used to the wrist pivoting motion without getting too tired or sore, see our featherweight range. A tambourine intended for the professional musician will be more heavy duty. The frame will be able to withstand a large amount of use, which includes not only shaking, but being struck by a hand, hips, or even drum sticks. The traditional riq holds generally fewer jingles than a tambourine and also has a layer of fish skin stretched over the hoop to act as a head that can be struck for tonality.
The tunable and the fixed head tambourines
Aside from the differences between professional and beginners’ models, there are altogether different styles of tambourines. Some are tunable, which means that they are circular models in which the head can be tuned to a certain tone by tightening or loosening the lugs which hold it in place. Others are fixed, which means that the heads are permanently attached and are not adjustable. The advanced player will find an advantage with the tunable tambourines. With a little tweaking, they will be able to get exactly the tone they desire. For anyone else, a fixed head may be advantageous, for the ability to just grab it and play without worrying about adjustments. Furthermore, some tambourines and riqs are made of traditional materials, such as wood and animal hide. In recent years, however, synthetic materials have been used to achieve nearly equal sound quality. Advantages to the newer tambourines made of substitute materials include extreme durability and increased volume in some cases. Many people also appreciate the lack of animal products being used in the production of the instrument. Other people, however, do not enjoy the sound of the synthetics, but truly desire the raw, natural sound of wood and skin tambourines and riqs.
