Highly decorated, this Saraswati sitar is named for the carved swan on the head stock.

The Rigvedic hymns dedicated to Saraswati mention her as a mighty river; symbolizing fertility and prosperity.

Her name literally means "the one who flows", which reflects not just the flow of water, but of thoughts, and words.
The Goddess Saraswati is often depicted as a, white-skinned woman having four arms.
Her arms represent mind, intellect, alertness, and ego.
Alternatively, these four arms also represent her children, the 4 Vedas, the primary sacred books for Hindus.
A white swan is often located next to her feet.
The swan symbolizes the ability to discriminate between good and bad, or the eternal and the evanescent. Sometimes a peacock is shown representing arrogance and pride over its beauty.
