If someone ever mentions Africa and drums in the same sentence, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the striking beat created by the Djembe drum in the hands of a skilled drummer.  He slaps the Djembe with an air of precision and elegance and dancers bounce all around in a frenzy of energy and felicity.  The Djembe embodies the cultural spirit and energy of Africa, and it takes quite a bit of skill to make it all come together.

The difference between a professional and a beginners djembe is none other than the drummer himself.  The djembe is so deeply rooted in African tradition that even children learn on the same drum that the elder drummers utilize.  Professionals today who utilize the djembe still demand the traditional drum made out of solid hardwood and covered in rawhide.

The most amazing attribute of the djembe has to be its astonishing range of sound.  Depending on the manipulation of its rawhide surface, muffled and sharp tones can be created that make a beat with a depth of the ocean.  The djembe achieves its high resonance from the combination of thin goat skin stretched over a hardwood frame that is carved from a single tree trunk!  The astonishing sound properties of the djembe are difficult to be reproduced by a normal drum because of the echo chamber effect produced by the haphazard nicks and dips carved within.  The rough internal surface gives the sound produced by the djembe a distant and ethereal property.

There are many variations of the djembe.  The most common type is the one that is still traditionally used all across Africa, and that is the wide head to tapered bodied hollowed tree trunk over which goat skin is pulled through the use of ropes and a metal ring.  Today there are synthetic and fiberglass versions available, but anyone with knowledge of the nature of the djembe knows that the authentic sound cannot be duplicated with synthetic alternatives.  The djembe often has a shoulder strap that holds the djembe suspended underneath the arm, but it can also be used by angling it off the ground.  The most important consideration is that the bottom must remain unobstructed.

If you want to make an authentic African beat, there is no substitute for the djembe.  The djembe is guaranteed to gather a crowd and lead to an upbeat community atmosphere.  The djembe can make a decent show on its own, but is even better when accompanied by a group of skilled performers.
